Draft — not yet in force

This is a draft, published so you can read it rather than being told it exists. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer, and parts of it describe how Control is designed to work rather than what has shipped — Control is in private beta and no payment has been taken. Details still to be settled are shown like this: to be confirmed.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Cancelling, refunds, and what happens to your data when you stop paying.

Effective date: effective date Last updated: effective date

In short

  • Cancel any time, from Settings. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
  • Cancelling never deletes your data. You drop to the Free plan and everything you've written is still there, and still exportable.
  • EU and UK consumers get a 14-day right to change their mind on a new subscription. If you asked us to start immediately, we may keep a small pro-rata amount for the days you actually used — see §3.
  • Outside that, we don't refund partial months as a rule, but we'd rather have a fair outcome than a rigid policy. If something went wrong, email us.
  • merchant of record is the seller. Refunds are issued by them, to your original payment method.

1. Who you actually bought from

All Control subscriptions are sold through merchant of record, which acts as the merchant of record.

What that means in practice:

Who is the legal seller? merchant of record. Your contract for the purchase itself is with them; your contract for the use of Control is with us.
Who charges your card? merchant of record. Their name, not ours, will appear on your statement — typically as mor statement descriptor.
Who handles VAT / GST / sales tax? merchant of record collects and remits it in your country.
Who issues invoices? merchant of record.
Who actually pays out a refund? merchant of record, on our instruction or their own.
Who do you contact? Contact us first at contact email — it's faster and we can approve most things directly. You may also contact merchant of record at mor support url.

merchant of record's buyer terms apply to your purchase alongside this policy: mor terms url. Where their terms give you more than this policy does, you get the more generous outcome. This policy never reduces a right you have under their terms or under the law.

2. Cancelling your subscription

2.1 How to cancel

Route Where
In the app Settings → Plan → Cancel subscription
Billing portal Settings → Plan → Manage billing, which opens merchant of record's portal
By email contact email — tell us the email address on your account and we'll do it for you

There is no retention flow, no phone call, no "are you sure" maze. Cancelling takes one click and takes effect immediately as an instruction.

2.2 What happens when you cancel

  1. Your subscription stops renewing. You will not be charged again.
  2. You keep full paid access until the end of the period you have already paid for. If you cancel on the 3rd of the month and your period runs to the 28th, you have Control+ until the 28th.
  3. On that date you move to the Free plan.
  4. Your data is not touched. Every item, note, personal fact and archived task stays exactly where it is. Item storage is unlimited on the Free plan too. What changes is your daily AI allowance and access to paid features (server-side voice transcription, and calendar import when it ships).
  5. You can still export everything, at any time, on any plan, from Settings → Privacy → Export.
  6. You can resubscribe at any time and pick up where you left off.

2.3 If you want your data gone as well

Cancelling and deleting are separate actions, deliberately. To delete your data, use Settings → Privacy → Delete account. That is permanent: all your rows are purged within 30 days and rolled out of backups within 35, and we email you to confirm. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.

3. EU and UK consumers: your 14-day right to withdraw

This section gives you rights on top of anything else in this policy. Nothing here reduces your statutory rights.

If you are a consumer resident in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you have a legal right to withdraw from a distance contract within 14 days, without giving any reason.

Source: the EU Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU) as implemented in your country; in the UK, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.

3.1 The 14 days

The period runs for 14 calendar days from the day your subscription contract is concluded — in practice, the day you complete checkout.

3.2 How immediate access interacts with it

When you subscribe to Control, you get access immediately. That is what almost everyone wants, but it has a legal consequence, so we tell you at checkout, and you have to actively agree:

At checkout you are asked to confirm:

☐ "I want Control to start immediately, during the 14-day withdrawal period. I understand that if I then withdraw, I may be charged a proportionate amount for the period I have already used."

That confirmation is recorded with your order.

What that means if you withdraw within 14 days:

Situation What you get back
You did not ask for immediate access, or you withdraw before the service actually starts A full refund.
You asked for immediate access and you withdraw within 14 days A refund of the amount you paid, less a proportionate amount for the days between your subscription starting and you withdrawing. On a $9.99 monthly plan, withdrawing on day 5 means we keep roughly $1.61 and refund the rest.
You asked for immediate access, and you have not actually used Control We will refund you in full. We are not going to bill anyone for a service they didn't touch, even where we'd be entitled to.

In practice, our policy is more generous than the law requires: if you withdraw within 14 days and you have used Control lightly or not at all, ask us and we will refund you in full.

3.3 How to withdraw

Just tell us, clearly, within the 14 days. Any clear statement is enough — email is fine.

  • Email contact email with the subject "Withdrawal", from the address on your account.
  • Or use the model withdrawal form in §3.5.
  • Or cancel in-app and email us to say you're exercising your withdrawal right, not just cancelling.

You only need to send the notice within the 14 days; it does not have to have been processed by then.

3.4 When you get your money back

We will instruct merchant of record to refund you without undue delay and within 14 days of receiving your withdrawal notice, using the same payment method you paid with. There is no fee. How quickly it lands in your account after that depends on your bank — usually 3–10 business days.

3.5 Model withdrawal form

You do not have to use this. Copy it, fill it in, and send it to contact email.

To: company legal name, registered address, contact email

I hereby give notice that I withdraw from my contract for the supply
of the following service:

  Control subscription — [plan name]

Ordered on: [date]
Name of consumer: [your name]
Address of consumer: [your address]
Email on the account: [your email]

4. Refunds outside the statutory withdrawal period

4.1 The general rule

Outside the EU/UK 14-day right, subscription payments are generally non-refundable, and cancellation stops future renewals rather than refunding the current period. This is the standard arrangement for a monthly subscription with no minimum term, and it is why we don't ask you to commit to a year.

4.2 When we will refund anyway

We would rather be fair than be right. We will normally refund, in full or in part, where:

Situation Typical outcome
You were charged after you cancelled Full refund of the incorrect charge. Always.
You were charged twice Full refund of the duplicate. Always.
You didn't realise it renewed, and you haven't used Control since the renewal Full refund of the latest period, within goodwill window days days of the charge.
A prolonged outage or a serious defect meant you couldn't use what you paid for Pro-rata refund or a service credit, your choice.
We materially reduced a paid feature or a plan limit during your paid period Pro-rata refund of the unused part of the period, and you may cancel — see Terms §7.4.
We terminated your account without cause, or we discontinued Control Pro-rata refund of the unused part of the period.
We added a new subprocessor you reasonably object to Pro-rata refund of the unused part of the period — see the Subprocessor List §3.
You bought the wrong plan and told us quickly We'll switch you and refund or charge the difference.

We will not normally refund where an account was terminated for a serious breach of the Terms (illegal use, security attacks, abuse) — except where the law requires it.

4.3 Just ask

If your situation isn't in the table and you think a refund is fair, email contact email and explain. We read every one. A one-person company can afford to look at cases individually, and we'd rather do that than lose someone over $9.99.

5. Upgrades, downgrades and pro-rata

Change What happens
Free → paid Charged immediately; access is immediate. Your 14-day withdrawal right (if you're in the EU/UK) starts now.
Upgrade $4.99 → $9.99 mid-period You are charged a pro-rata amount for the remainder of the current period, and the higher plan starts immediately. Your next full charge is at the new price.
Downgrade $9.99 → $4.99 Takes effect at your next renewal. You keep the higher plan until then. We do not refund the difference for the current period.
Downgrade to Free Same as cancelling — see §2.2.
Reactivating after cancelling A new subscription at the price then in effect.

Exact proration is calculated by merchant of record and shown to you before you confirm.

6. Chargebacks

If you think a charge is wrong, please email us before contacting your bank. We can usually fix it in a day, and a chargeback costs everyone more.

If a chargeback is raised, merchant of record handles it. We may suspend the account while it is under review. Your data is not deleted during a chargeback dispute.

7. Free plan

The Free plan is free. There is nothing to refund, and nothing to cancel — just stop using it, or delete your account.

8. Currency and taxes

  • Prices are in US dollars.
  • Refunds are issued in the currency you were charged in. Because exchange rates move, the amount that lands in your account may differ slightly from the amount that left it. That difference is your bank's, not ours, and we can't compensate for it.
  • Refunds include any tax that was charged on the refunded amount. merchant of record handles the tax side.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The version in force when you made a purchase is the version that applies to that purchase. We'll give at least 30 days' notice of material changes.
